A forty-foot-tall steel cowboy in a red checkered shirt and blue jeans looms over the intersection, his right arm waving mechanically while a neon cigarette glows between his fingers. The neon sign once belonged to the Pioneer Club, where it greeted gamblers starting in nineteen fifty-one. Designers created the figure to be the largest mechanical neon sign in the world at the time. A speaker system inside the cowboy’s chest used to boom a hearty, Howdy Partner, to everyone walking down Fremont Street.
