Brick Presbyterian Church (New York City)

The Brick Presbyterian Church is named for its building material, a tradition that began with its very first structure in seventeen sixty-seven. When the congregation outgrew its original wooden church on Wall Street, they constructed a new building of red brick on Beekman Street to accommodate the northern expansion of the city. This simple identifier stuck, and the congregation has maintained the tradition of building in brick through three successive locations as the city continued to grow around them. You are standing before the third iteration of this church, which was dedicated in nineteen forty and designed in the neo-Georgian style to honor its historic roots.
