Jacob Ruppert Sr. House

The mansion that once stood at this intersection was a pioneer of the Gilded Age frontier. When Jacob Ruppert Sr. commissioned architect William Schickel to build his family home in 1881, the site was surrounded by small farms and scattered shanties rather than the grand residences that now define Fifth Avenue. The house was an eclectic four-story structure that combined several dramatic architectural styles, including a prominent corner tower capped with a conical roof that served as a visual landmark in an otherwise largely undeveloped area.
