Conservatory Water

The name of this pond stems from a grand architectural plan that was never completed. When Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed Central Park in the mid-nineteenth century, they envisioned a massive glass conservatory for tropical plants standing on this very site. Budget constraints eventually forced the city to abandon the greenhouse project, but the name stuck to the reflecting pool that had already been excavated for it.
