Intar Theatre

INTAR Theatre began in 1966 when a group of Cuban and Puerto Rican artists pooled their money to rent a space on Sixth Avenue because they found almost no professional opportunities for Latinx performers in the city. The name stands for International Arts Relations, reflecting their original mission to bridge cultural divides through the arts. In its earliest years, the company focused on staging classic European and American plays in Spanish. By the 1970s, the group shifted its focus toward developing new works in English, effectively carving out a permanent home for the Latine voice in American theater. This mission continues today with a commitment to commissioning and producing bold, innovative stories that reflect the diverse, intersectional experiences of the Latine community.
