The Spur

The Spur serves as the final, grandest chapter of the High Line, projecting eastward over West Thirtieth Street to terminate high above the intersection of Tenth Avenue. While the rest of the High Line is defined by its long, narrow path, this space opens into the largest public gathering area in the entire park. It was once a vital industrial branch of the New York Central Railroad, designed specifically to deliver mail and freight directly into the upper floors of the Morgan General Mail Facility. Local advocates fought a dedicated campaign to save this section from demolition, eventually winning the right to preserve the industrial skeleton and repurpose it for the public.
