The Asia Society was established in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller the Third to bridge the gap in understanding between the United States and the nations of Asia. At a time when geopolitical shifts in the post-World War II era were changing the global landscape, Rockefeller envisioned a nonpartisan organization that would use education, policy dialogue, and cultural exchange to foster deeper, more meaningful connections. He believed that art was a fundamental tool for this process, leading him to build a personal collection of masterpieces that eventually became the foundation for the institution.
