Clarence Whitman Mansion

The Clarence Whitman Mansion stands as a striking example of the Gilded Age ambition that transformed this neighborhood. Completed in 1898, it was designed by the architectural firm Parish and Schroeder as one of a pair of grand neo-Renaissance limestone residences. Clarence Whitman, a wealthy importer of fine laces and embroidery, purchased the home and quickly began customizing it to suit his personal tastes. He lived here with his family, eventually hosting a society wedding for his son before selling the property in 1904. The house remains a testament to the era when Manhattan's elite built these massive, multi-story townhouses to display their status and wealth.
