Montgomery Clift's Former Home

The townhouse at two hundred seventeen East Sixty-First Street served as the final sanctuary for Montgomery Clift, the celebrated method actor who redefined American screen acting. Clift moved into this narrow, five-story residence in 1960 after a flash fire forced him out of his previous apartment just a few doors down. He spent his remaining years here, living in a space he tailored to his own eccentric tastes, including the installation of a custom teak bar cart that still sits in the sitting room today.
