The Halston House

The building at one hundred one East sixty-third Street looks like a fortress of dark glass and steel amidst its traditional brick neighbors. Known simply as One Oh One, it began as an eighteen-eighties carriage house before architect Paul Rudolph radically transformed it in the late nineteen-sixties. Rudolph replaced the original structure with a modernist design featuring a triple-height living room and a complex, labyrinthine arrangement of balconies and floating staircases. When fashion designer Halston purchased the property in nineteen-seventy-four, he treated the home as a three-dimensional sculpture. For fifteen years, he lived here and turned this quiet Lenox Hill street into the epicenter of Manhattan nightlife.
