Alice Tully Hall

Alice Tully Hall is named after an extraordinary woman who was far more than just a philanthropist. Alice Tully was a trained dramatic soprano who performed professionally in Europe and the United States during the years between the world wars. She even held a pilot's license and flew for the Civil Air Patrol during the second world war. When the time came to build a home for chamber music at Lincoln Center, she drew on her own life as a performer to insist on specific details, such as generous spacing between rows so that every patron would be comfortable. She provided the majority of the funding for the hall, which opened on her sixty-seventh birthday in 1969.
