Water Taxi Beach

Water Taxi Beach began as a radical experiment in two thousand five to transform a disused industrial wharf into a temporary urban oasis. Organizers hauled in over four hundred tons of sand from the Jersey Shore to create a patch of beach against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. The project aimed to revitalize the waterfront and entice city dwellers to utilize water taxis as a primary mode of transit for their weekend commutes. It succeeded in changing how residents engaged with the East River, serving as a rare space where people could lounge in the sand just minutes away from the bustle of the city.
