Pulitzer Fountain

The Pulitzer Fountain stands as a centerpiece of Grand Army Plaza, born from the final wishes of the newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. When he died in 1911, he bequeathed fifty thousand dollars to build a fountain that would evoke the grandeur of those in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The architect Thomas Hastings and sculptor Karl Bitter won the competition to design it, choosing to top the five tiered basins with a bronze figure of Pomona, the Roman goddess of abundance.
