The Children's Museum of Manhattan began in nineteen seventy-three as a grassroots response to a severe fiscal crisis in New York City. When public schools were forced to eliminate art, music, and cultural programs, a group of artists and educators refused to let children lose these essential outlets. They opened a small basement storefront originally called GAME, an acronym for Growth Through Art and Museum Experience. This modest project was designed to serve children in Harlem and the Upper West Side, proving that creative learning could flourish even during the city's most challenging times.
