Red House (Upper West Side)

The Red House at three hundred fifty West Eighty-fifth Street stands as an architectural anomaly on a block otherwise defined by uniform townhouses. Completed in nineteen hundred and four, the building was designed by the firm Harde and Short, who deliberately broke away from the prevailing Beaux-Arts style of the era. The architects utilized red brick paired with intricate white terra-cotta ornamentation to create a structure that looks like an Elizabethan manor transported to Manhattan. They even incorporated the salamander badge of King Francis the First into the facade, a flourish that became a signature of their later, more elaborate projects across the city.
