Sherman Square

Sherman Square exists today as a tiny, fenced-in triangle of land covering only two hundred sixty-four square feet. You might walk right past it without realizing it is officially a city park. The space is a scalene triangle wedged between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, a remnant of the city layout created when the original Commissioners Plan of eighteen eleven was interrupted by the diagonal path of Broadway. The city acquired this land by condemnation in eighteen forty-nine to facilitate the widening of what was then called Bloomingdale Road.
