The Yorkville Bank Building

The Yorkville Bank Building stands as a reminder of the neighborhood's identity at the turn of the twentieth century. When it opened in 1905, Yorkville was a thriving hub for German and Hungarian immigrants, and this bank was designed to be the financial heart of their community. Reinhold Van Der Emde, a German immigrant who originally made his fortune running a local drugstore, founded the bank to serve his fellow residents. He hired Robert Maynicke, a German-born architect, to craft a building that communicated both stability and prestige.
