The house at Spanjaardstraat seventeen wears a distinct, deep-gabled facade that dates back to the seventeenth century. While much of Bruges underwent renovations in the nineteenth century, this building retains its original brickwork and stepped gable. During the late eighteen hundreds, a local merchant named Karel de Flou occupied these rooms while documenting the city's place names and linguistic history. He spent decades filling the interior with thousands of hand-written index cards, creating a massive, private archive of the Flemish language.
