Walplein is a cobblestoned square defined by the low, gabled brick houses that line its perimeter. While tourists drift through the larger market squares, this space served as the primary yard for the ancient tanneries that powered the city economy. The tanners required constant access to the canal water for their trade, and the narrow, winding alleys leading from this square carried the smell of their work for centuries. Today, a single centuries-old linden tree grows in the center of the yard.
