Castillo Hidalgo

Castillo Hidalgo sits atop the craggy crest of Cerro Santa Lucía, marked by its sharp, white stone battlements and a heavy, arched gateway that mimics a medieval fortress. This structure began as a nineteenth-century military fort built to guard the city, but it transitioned into a venue for society balls and cultural events. Its most dramatic moment came in eighteen seventy-two, when Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna transformed this defensive point into the centerpiece of his urban renovation, turning a jagged, fortified hilltop into a garden.
