Palace of the Courts of Justice

The Palace of the Courts of Justice occupies an entire block, defined by its severe neoclassical facade and a massive row of unfluted columns facing the street. Emilio Doyere designed this building in nineteen oh five to house the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals. When workers broke ground, they followed the orders of President Germán Riesco, who wanted a structure that projected absolute legal authority. The building survived the nineteen eighty-five earthquake with little damage, leaving the original marble floors and grand central staircase intact.
