Mulato Gil de Castro Square features a series of terraced stone walls and low-slung, irregular garden beds that cling to the steep slope of Santa Lucia Hill. The square honors the man who served as the official painter for the Chilean independence movement, famously capturing the faces of heroes like Bernardo O’Higgins. Gil de Castro died in poverty, leaving behind a collection of portraits that today serve as the primary visual record of the men and women who shaped the nation’s early political identity.
