The Former National Congress Building occupies an entire city block, defined by its neoclassical facade and the long, colonnaded porticos facing the street. Finished in eighteen seventy-six, the structure housed Chile’s legislative chambers for over a century. When a devastating fire destroyed the original Jesuit church on this site in eighteen sixty-three, thousands died in the blaze. Construction of this building began on those same foundations, replacing the site of the tragedy with the seat of the nation's political power.
