St. John's Church features two sharp, seventy-four-meter-tall towers that rise above the Helsinki skyline. Adolf Melander designed the red brick structure in the neo-Gothic style, completing the construction in eighteen ninety-one. The church occupies a former site of Midsummer bonfires, where locals gathered to drive away evil spirits. Workers unearthed thousands of red bricks during the building process, which Melander incorporated into the exterior walls. The twin spires remain the tallest point in the neighborhood today.
