Olofborg Residential Building (designed by Eliel Saarinen)

The Olofborg residential building holds a distinctive corner of Helsinki with its heavy, gray stone walls and copper-trimmed roofline that seem to anchor the intersection. Built in nineteen oh seven by Eliel Saarinen and his partners, the structure reflects a moment when architects were abandoning ornate details for a grounded, national romantic style. The building housed the city's intellectual and artistic elite, but it gained its reputation when the composer Jean Sibelius moved into a spacious apartment on the second floor.
