Luotsikatu 3

The massive gray stone facade at Luotsikatu three rises above the street with carved eagles perched above the entrance. This building belongs to the Jugendstil movement, designed by the architect Lars Sonck in nineteen oh four. Sonck worked with rough-hewn granite to mimic the rugged Finnish landscape. He designed this apartment block for sea captains, positioning the windows to capture maximum daylight during the long, dark winters. The stones hold the marks of the masons who shaped them by hand over a century ago.
