Old Market Hall

The Old Market Hall stands out with its long, red-brick exterior and arched windows lining the South Harbor. Built in eighteen eighty-nine, it replaced the open-air fish markets that once cluttered the square in winter. Hygiene was the primary concern, as city officials wanted a climate-controlled space to sell meat and fish. A merchant named Gustaf Nystrom designed the hall, and for over a century, local vendors have pulled their stalls into this narrow, wooden-roofed corridor to escape the freezing Baltic air.
