This square is named after Alexandre Yersin, a Swiss-French bacteriologist who became a medical legend. In eighteen ninety-four, while working in extreme conditions in Hong Kong, he successfully identified the plague bacillus, which now bears his name as Yersinia pestis. He spent much of his career in Indochina, where he dedicated his life to treating the sick and founding medical institutions, earning him the affectionate local title of Fifth Uncle.
