While it functions today as a gateway near the edge of the sixteenth arrondissement and the Bois de Boulogne, the site traces its origins to the nineteenth century as one of the entry points in the Thiers wall. This defensive fortification, constructed in the eighteen forties, once completely encircled Paris to protect it from invasion. The wall is long gone, having been demolished in the interwar period, but its legacy persists in the naming of these transit points along the city's modern periphery.
