You are standing before La Mere Catherine, a restaurant that has anchored the Place du Tertre since seventeen ninety-three. Before the French Revolution turned this building into a tavern, it served as the village presbytery for the local church of Saint Pierre de Montmartre. Its original owner, Catherine Lamotte, earned the affectionate nickname Mother Catherine from the locals who frequented her establishment. The revolutionary leader Georges Danton famously held meetings with his followers within these very walls.
