Place Jean-Marais

You are standing at Place Jean-Marais, a quiet square located at the very peak of the Montmartre hill. It serves as the forecourt to the Church of Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, one of the oldest religious sites in the city. The square was officially named in April two thousand eight to honor the acclaimed French actor Jean Marais, who lived in the Montmartre neighborhood for several decades. Marais was a towering figure in French cinema and theater, famously known as the muse and longtime partner of filmmaker Jean Cocteau. His career defined the golden age of French swashbuckler films, and he remained a dedicated artist until his death in the late twentieth century.
