The police station on Rue de la Goutte d'Or sits behind a reinforced gate and heavy metal shutters. On a morning in January twenty sixteen, a man ran toward the entrance wearing a fake suicide vest and wielding a butcher knife. He carried a piece of paper featuring an emblem of the Islamic State and shouted before officers fired twelve shots. The attacker died on the pavement. Investigators later found a mobile phone and a handwritten letter pledging allegiance to the group in his pocket.
