The Académie Vitti occupies the ground floor of a narrow building on the Boulevard du Montparnasse, marked by a large window that once flooded the studio with northern light. Founded by the Vitti sisters in eighteen eighty-nine, this art school catered specifically to women who were denied access to the official École des Beaux-Arts. Cesare Vitti, a costume designer, and his wife Maria, a former model, invited painters like Paul Gauguin to teach here while students from across the Atlantic crowded the floor.
