The Tour Montparnasse is the only skyscraper in central Paris, a dark, sixty-story slab of glass and steel that looms over the low-rise Haussmann skyline. Built in nineteen seventy-three, the tower replaced the old Montparnasse railway station. Parisians hated the building from the moment it appeared, calling it an eyesore that blocked views of the Eiffel Tower. In response to the public outcry, city officials banned the construction of any more skyscrapers in the city center for decades afterward.
