The Cité internationale universitaire de Paris stands on what used to be the Thiers fortifications, a massive line of military defensive walls that once encircled Paris. After the First World War, these obsolete military grounds were cleared to create this sprawling residential campus. André Honnorat, a visionary politician and one of the site's primary founders, believed that if young people from different countries lived together in their formative years, they would build the personal friendships necessary to prevent another global conflict. He famously described the project as a school of human relations for peace.
