Cemetery Montrouge is defined by the high, windowless stone walls that isolate its rectangular grounds from the busy streets of the fourteenth arrondissement. Established in eighteen nineteen, it serves as a final resting place for the working-class families of southern Paris and the artists who lived in the nearby studios of Montparnasse. Among the rows of crowded tombs, Henri Rousseau, the self-taught painter who famously spent his life as a customs officer, lies in a grave paid for by his friends and local poets.
