Cemetery Montrouge

The Cemetery of Montrouge is a site of distinct administrative irony. Although it is located within the fourteenth arrondissement of Paris, it is owned and operated by the neighboring municipality of Montrouge. This unusual arrangement dates back to eighteen sixty, when Paris annexed a large section of surrounding territory, yet this specific burial ground remained under the jurisdiction of the town it served. It was established in eighteen twenty-one following a decree by Napoleon that mandated cemeteries be moved away from parish churches to improve urban hygiene, forcing the town of Montrouge to find a new resting place for its citizens outside the village center.
