Espace Van Gogh

The Espace Van Gogh features a long, pale stone facade punctuated by a rhythm of arched windows that define its seventeenth-century architecture. Originally built as the Hotel-Dieu hospital, it served the sick of Arles for centuries. Vincent van Gogh spent time here in eighteen eighty-nine, not as a patient for his ear, but after he suffered a breakdown and required medical care. He painted the garden at the center of the building while living in these cramped, austere quarters under the watchful eyes of staff.
