The Palais de l'Industrie occupies a massive rectangular footprint on the Champs-Élysées with a facade of stone and iron stretching over two hundred meters. Built for the eighteen fifty-five World's Fair, this structure housed thousands of exhibits meant to showcase French manufacturing power to the world. Queen Victoria traveled here to see the display, becoming the first British monarch to visit Paris in centuries. The building held its ground for decades before authorities demolished it to clear space for the Grand Palais.
