Salle Pleyel

The Salle Pleyel stands on the Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore as an Art Deco monument built specifically to serve the needs of a piano manufacturing empire. Ignace Pleyel founded the Pleyel piano company in the early nineteenth century and sought to create a world-class venue that could properly showcase the technical precision of his instruments. The current building opened in 1927, designed by the company director and acoustician Gustave Lyon, who treated the entire structure as a scientific instrument for sound. He insisted on a unique horseshoe shape and calculated room volume to ensure that the music resonated with a specific clarity that standard concert halls of the era could not replicate.
