Place Blanche

Place Blanche takes its name from the relentless clouds of white dust that once filled the air here. In the nineteenth century, the nearby mills and quarries on the hill of Montmartre processed immense quantities of gypsum and flour. This fine powder coated the laborers and carts that passed through this intersection, leaving the ground and the local buildings perpetually dusted in white.
