The Maison Folie Wazemmes occupies a former textile mill defined by its sawtooth roofline and rough, dark brick facade. In two thousand four, the city converted this nineteenth-century factory into a cultural center as part of Lille’s year as the European Capital of Culture. Before the conversion, the site housed the Leclercq spinning mill, where workers produced thread for decades. The spinning machines stopped in the nineteen eighties, leaving the sprawling industrial shell vacant until the municipal redevelopment project began.
