Les Halles de Wazemmes

The massive curved roof of Les Halles de Wazemmes rises over the neighborhood with a distinct metallic arch that frames the market hall. This structure replaced an older nineteenth century hall in the nineteen seventies to centralize the local trade. When the project began, butchers and merchants argued fiercely over their new stall assignments, with some long-time families refusing to move from their established corners. The resulting interior remains a loud, dense collection of regional produce, hanging sausages, and constant bartering.
