The facade of Méert is carved from dark, polished wood and lined with gilded moldings that gleam even on grey days in Lille. Inside this former confectionery shop, founded in seventeen sixty-one, the walls are covered in mirrors and intricate eighteenth-century woodwork. Napoleon Bonaparte’s wife, Josephine, once ordered her famous vanilla waffles here, having them shipped regularly to the Tuileries Palace. The shop remains a holdout of imperial elegance, still selling those same thin, cream-filled waffles behind its ornate, nineteenth-century storefront.
