Monument to the Carrier Pigeon (Lille)

The Monument to the Carrier Pigeon features a bronze pigeon perched atop a stone pedestal, its wings outstretched as if ready for flight. Commissioned in nineteen thirty-six, the statue commemorates the thousands of messenger birds used by the French military during the First World War. When German forces occupied Lille and severed telegraph lines, these pigeons became the city's only way to communicate with the outside world. Many birds died delivering intelligence, including one that carried a final, desperate message before falling to enemy fire.
