Beffroi de Lille

The Beffroi de Lille rises over a hundred meters into the air, topped with a clock face that can be seen from miles away. It sits attached to the town hall, built in the nineteen twenties after the First World War destroyed the original municipal buildings. Architect Émile Dubuisson designed it using reinforced concrete and red brick, blending modernist geometric shapes with the traditional Flemish style. During the Second World War, soldiers used the tower as a vantage point to spot approaching enemy aircraft.
