Jardin Vauban

The Jardin Vauban features a dense, winding layout of mature trees, winding paths, and a small pond that defies the rigid, geometric style common in French public gardens. It was designed in eighteen sixty-three by Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps to wrap around the imposing seventeenth-century brick walls of the Citadelle. When the construction crew arrived, they prioritized the local landscape, incorporating existing boulders and subtle slopes into the design to mimic a natural forest rather than a manicured park.
