Les Sarrazins

The heavy stone lintel above the entrance at Les Sarrazins bears the worn date of sixteen thirty-two. This low-slung building, wedged into the dense fabric of Lille, served as a fortified refuge during the turbulent decades when the Spanish Netherlands clashed with French forces. A local legend claims a hidden tunnel once connected its cellar to the city defenses, allowing soldiers to move unseen under the streets. Today, it remains a rare, defiant survivor of the city's older, more militarized life.
