Kompakt

The storefront on Werderstrasse displays a modest, clean facade marked by a small, black-and-white sign. Inside this narrow space, the Kompakt label grew from a hobbyist record shop into the primary engine of Cologne's minimal techno movement. Wolfgang Voigt and his partners started pressing vinyl here in the nineteen nineties, often recording tracks in the back room before putting them on the shelves up front. They defined a precise, stuttering sound that attracted electronic producers from across the globe to this quiet street.
