The heavy, rough-hewn stone archway entrance to Casa Santo Domingo stands in sharp contrast to the brightly painted colonial facades nearby. This site once housed the Convent of Santo Domingo, a seventeenth-century complex that served as one of the most powerful monasteries in the Americas. After the devastating earthquakes of seventeen seventy-three destroyed the sanctuary, the ruins lay abandoned for two centuries. They remained a tangled graveyard of fallen vaults and exposed crypts until the nineties, when workers cleared the rubble.
