Casa Popenoe

The walls of Casa Popenoe are painted a distinct, muted ochre, a color that separates the heavy masonry from the surrounding white stucco buildings. This sixteenth-century mansion survived the massive earthquakes that leveled much of Antigua. In nineteen thirty, Wilson Popenoe, a botanist, and his wife, Dorothy, bought the ruin. They spent years meticulously restoring the house, bringing in period antiques and authentic tiles to recreate a colonial home. The house remains a private residence, keeping its secrets behind those thick walls.
